The Right Place at the Right Time
How do you know when you are doing what you were meant to do?
Is it when you are in the right place at the right time?
Is it when you get that euphoric feeling that forces you to live in the moment and embrace it in a way that makes you hope it will never end?
In my own headspace, I knew that Big Bird Camp was where I needed to be in the moment. I just felt so “in my element,” and it felt right. Every session spoke to me and I could see a similar perspective in the eyes of my teammates. This year was my 4th year going to Bird Camp, but this year was unlike any other. I expected greatness, but this was far more than that.
From the moment we set foot on campus with the 250 other women, I could feel the energy. Maybe it was the wine and beer, I don’t know, but as the weekend progressed the feeling deepened. These women were here to benefit each other. To make each other better. To empower each other and leave camp ready to keep the momentum going. We had the ultimate opportunity to learn from some of the best in our sport. We also heard from the change makers looking to improve the way women perceive themselves. From the pros, to the Haute Volée, to the Volée, the interaction reminded us that we are all the same. We have the same thoughts, fears, and insecurities. We may be chasing different goals, but we all struggle and we all rise up together.
We ran with Lauren Fleshman and then listened as she taught us how to use our writing as therapy. We danced with Sally Bergeson & Dr. Lesko, all while experiencing the magic they created. We joked around and got real with Kara Goucher. We compared and went over training with Allie Kieffer. We connected with Volée members from all over the country. No topic was off limits, and I couldn’t have been happier leaving that weekend feeling ready to take on the world.
Reflecting back on this year’s Bird Camp reminds me of how we as runners grow. Every time I think back to where I came from and how I have changed, I learn something. The same holds true when I change my scenery. It’s easy to think that I have it all figured out. It’s easy to think that I have already been down every road, and worked through every adversity to come out the other side. Then, I realized that I need other people and other places to keep me moving forward. This is what Big Bird Camp was for me. It was the change of pace and mindset that I need to move from where I was in early 2017 to where I know I am going to be in late 2018.
As a team we have worked hard to get things going this year, carefully forming bonds with those that share our values, and choosing companies that believe in us. I knew Oiselle was that for me when I joined the Volée in 2014, but it took my first Bird Camp in 2015 to really appreciate why and how Oiselle was different, and why I was in the right place. Big Bird Camp 2018 confirmed that Oiselle was the one for RDP. The value of support & love far outweighs anything when success is on the line. Oiselle does that for us. Us, RDP, a group of 6 women running for the love of the sport and the inspiration that comes along with chasing our goals.
